I Wasted Almost 10 Years on the Wrong Tech Stack.

Hello Reader, Not that long ago I spoke to the computer science and business club at Rutgers University (ranked number one in New Jersey for both engineering and computer science). Talking with those students took me right back to my own college years in India. Studying engineering. It did not work that way, and the detour cost me almost a decade. I got trained on a tech stack that turned out to be pretty much useless in the real world. It took me nearly 10 years to retool from mainframe into cloud. If I had been paying attention to where the industry was heading instead of where my syllabus was pointing, I could have cut that timeline dramatically. But that was only half the lesson. When I got to the other side of the table - leading interviews at Amazon - I saw candidates making a different version of the same mistake I made. They were not getting rejected because they answered questions wrong - the technical knowledge was fine. They were getting passed over for a reason most engineers never think to prepare for. I break down exactly what that reason is in the talk, including the specific patterns I saw again and again, and what those Rutgers students were doing differently that already had most of them holding offers at Amazon, JP Morgan Chase, and Goldman Sachs before graduation. I also share the five things I wish I had understood at 22 - the ones that would have made my path into big tech faster and a lot less painful. Some of them are obvious in hindsight.
